Anxiety Treatment near Syracuse, NY and Surrounding Areas

What is an Anxiety Disorder?

Effective anxiety treatment begins with understanding what anxiety is. Anxiety is a common and natural human emotion that people experience in their everyday lives.  Anxiety can be a healthy, positive thing when it motivates us to do well in our work or protects us from dangerous experiences or events.  However, anxiety can become a problem when it creates extreme emotional distress or causes us problems in our everyday lives.

If you or a loved one are looking for help with dealing with anxiety, therapy can be an effective anxiety treatment. Therapy can help address what causes anxiety, and help you learn strategies for coping.

Different Types of Anxiety Disorders:

Agoraphobia: People with Agoraphobia experience intense anxiety symptoms, such as  fear of real or anticipated situations where they might not be able to escape.  They might fear leaving the home, being in a crowded area or enclosed spaces, or using public transportation.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder: People with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) experience much more worry and tension than the average person on a day to day basis.  It is chronic and people with GAD generally experience these feelings regularly.  It generally involves anticipation of disaster and can be specific to concerns about work, family, health, relationships, job or school performance.

Panic Disorder: Panic Disorder is characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic and fear that peak within minutes, commonly known as panic attacks.  When people have panic attacks they experience extreme physical symptoms such as trembling, shaking, sweating, heart palpitations and dizziness.

Social Anxiety Disorder:  People with Social Anxiety Disorder, also known as Social Phobia, have a persistent fear of being watched, negatively judged or criticized by others.  People with this disorder experience heightened anxiety symptoms or panic when they are in or thinking about social situations.

The types of anxiety disorders I treat most often in my therapy practice are Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder.

Anxiety Treatment near Syracuse, NY

Anxiety treatment may include talk therapy, medication management or a combination of both.  Although medication may be helpful in managing physical symptoms, therapy can help address the underlying causes and help you learn strategies for coping.  Through therapy as an anxiety treatment, you can identify how your self-talk leads to worry and fear, and learn ways to replace any irrational thoughts with those that are more rational and balanced.  This form of anxiety treatment can help you look at your fears and worries in a new way. If you feel that medication might be a good option for your anxiety treatment, please speak to your medical provider.
